Best Practices toward Successful Farming

Enterprise Technology Review | Friday, March 15, 2019

Agricultural work needs to be organized into efficient stages to earn a good yield. The agriculture industry has experienced massive growth with the involvement of some of the latest technologies. The innovative practices and technologies may prove to be the future of farming and agriculture.

Vertical farming is a revolutionary and more sustainable method of agriculture that lowers the requirement of water to up to 70 percent and saves considerable space and soil. This method of farming is more effective and productive. In urban farming, utilization of less space is a major advantage. The potential to improve the efficiency in urban farming systems is high.

With automation, Artificial Intelligence and IoT drones make precision farming a reality, and this is inexpensive. Spraying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is safer and faster than the manual process, and this uses fewer quantities of chemicals. Once drones can work autonomously, farmers can operate them through a smartphone app. Pollination aside, there are many ways that agriculture could utilize drones. It includes aerial drone photography for a quick look at fields and automated crop harvest.

Blockchain in agriculture tracks the machinery maintenance records, sensors, and other equipment. The updated status of the crops is recorded in a digital ledger. The automated vehicles for agriculture are the elements of machine learning and IoT innovation. With the help of AI, the driverless vehicles for the farm can be innovated. A company called Smart Ag has announced functional driverless tractor technology. It is in the form of AutoCart software, which is a cloud-based platform. This software assists the farmers during the demanding harvest season. The technology will allow the farmers to automate and enhance the efficiency of the existing equipment.

The adoption of technology in agriculture has led to various changes in many traditional farming methods. In modern agriculture, the focus is on decreasing the investments in general operations while at the same time working towards better performance and high production. It is important to have a clear understanding of any technology before adopting it.
