How the Obstacle Detection Sensor is Increasing the Demand of Drones

Enterprise Technology Review | Monday, January 27, 2020

Drones have many benefits like delivering parcels, and the collision avoidance sensors help them avoid obstacles so that they can move freely.

FREMONT, CA: Drones that have sensors to avoid collision and obstacle detection in them are becoming more common in the consumer sectors. Moreover, in recent years, more drones were manufactured with collision avoiding sensors.

The avoidance technology and obstacle detection sensors were started because of the sensors identifying objects that are in front of the drone. Therefore, the new drones like the Yuneec, DJI, Walkera, and many others have obstacle avoidance sensors in the front, side, below, and back.

Several technologies are used for detecting and avoiding obstacles such as stereo vision, ultrasonic, time-of-flight, monocular vision, infrared, and lidar sensors. Manufacturers are combining these several sensors for generating the collision avoidance systems, and obstacle detection.

Here are two of the critical benefits of Collision Avoidance Drones.

Reduce Insurance Cost

The expense of insuring a professional aerial filming or multispectral drone can be high. The amount of advanced multirotor carrying expensive camera equipment can be extensively huge. Therefore, for such top pricey drones, it is significant to have, but a drone having obstacle detection avoidance systems can reduce the cost of the insurance.

Drones are used so that it can benefit us, and there are chances that in future they will autonomously deliver medications, parcels, and even pizza at the doorsteps.

Flying Indoors by Avoiding Obstacles

Most of the drones use GPS and GLONASS satellite navigation systems while flying so that they know the exact location and where they can fly stably. However, it can be easy to operate outside in comparison with indoor. Outside areas have more open space, so the chances of it hitting somewhere lessen down, whereas in indoor areas, the drones can hit obstacles and get damaged. But there are several advantages of using the drone indoor, particularly in areas like factories and warehouses. The factories and warehouses can use the drone for logistics, counting inventory, and also for inspections. As it is difficult to fly indoors due to obstacles, the drones might need a pilot who can manually operate it while flying. However, with the help of barriers avoidance sensors, drones can autonomously navigate themselves indoors.
