Ocean Infinity Dives Deep In Innovation after Launching Armada

Enterprise Technology Review | Monday, May 11, 2020

Armada will add 15 bespoke unmanned surface robots to Ocean Infinity’s current fleet of autonomous underwater vessels

Fremont, CA: Ocean Infinity, the next generation seabed survey and ocean exploration enterprise based in the U.S. has launched Armada, a new marine technology and data company that boasts of the industry’s largest fleet of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs).

In the interest of combining technology and environmental sustainability, Armada adds 15 bespoke designed marine robots initially to the current fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) of Ocean Infinity. Armada’s fleet is presently being constructed and is expected to deploy by the end of this year.

The launching of Armada’s fleet will be a benchmark of significant technological advancements in the domain. Each unmanned surface robot built by Armada is designed to serve a wide array of industries. It is fully equipped to conduct a multiplicity of offshore data acquisition and intervention operations at a maximum depth of 6000 m. These robot vessels are also capable of remotely deploying a range of the latest sensors along with AUVs and ROVs for acquisition of both visual and acoustic data. Armada’s fleet is fully automatic and does not need people on board nor the host vessel nearby. These AUVs will be controlled and operated by expert mariners employing satellite communications from state-of-the-art onshore facilities in Austin, TX, and Southhampton, England.

The new flotilla by Armada, with zero human intervention offshore, is said to be the safest the industry has to offer to date. The fleet approach produces 90 percent less carbon dioxide emissions when compared to other conventional survey vessels—making it the most environmentally friendly company in the industry.

Oliver Plunkett, CEO of Ocean Infinity, said: “We’ve been driven to innovate by a desire to reduce further our impact on the environment and the time people spend at sea. We have built an outstanding team that boasts world-leading expertise to take this next stage of our business forward for the benefit of our clients and all those who work with us. The launch of Armada re-confirms Ocean Infinity as the leading marine robotics and ocean data company in the world.”

Dan Hook, Managing Director for Armada, said: “We are very excited to be launching Armada, which perfectly complements the other service offerings in the Ocean Infinity Group. The pioneering technology makes our operations world-leading in terms of environmental sustainability and safety, while still achieving the very highest levels of data quality and value for our clients. With no requirement for a host vessel, we are breaking new ground in the area of subsea technology and data. We look forward to providing our existing and new clients with a best in class solution that will be revolutionary for the industry.”
