Road Ahead for the Convergence of Physical Security and Cybersecurity

Enterprise Technology Review | Monday, June 03, 2019

FREMONT, CA: The advancements in technologies have fostered their incorporation across the industries. For example, the healthcare industry is exploiting artificial intelligence (AI) for discovering new drugs and analyzing patterns for cancer detection.

The physical security industry is accepting the prowess of these technologies too but only after contemplating over the skepticism attached to them. Further, the numerous use cases of technologies like AI, businesses are opening up to new possibilities.

With such powerful technologies boosting a new phase of security, stronger players are entering the market. Thus, it is incumbent on the experienced players to use their knowledge for new technological advancements. Moreover, striving for unique products that fit the current needs will strengthen the trust over these technologies.

Physical Security and Cybersecurity Combined

In 2017, Lappeenranta, Finland, attackers attempted distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, affecting the centralized heating systems and leaving the citizens stranded in the sub-zero temperatures. Though they were promptly relocated while the system was restored, the attack exposed the vulnerabilities of modern security systems.

The convergence of physical security and cybersecurity systems is essential against such attacks. Traditionally, the physical and logical security systems had little in common, and combining them can be a costly and complex proposition. But with emerging technologies and the urgency to safeguard against cyberattacks has led the companies to work toward the convergence.

While some companies excel in cybersecurity, others are comfortable with physical security and access control. The collaboration of such expertise-exclusive companies and convergence of their capabilities will not only provide a safer environment but will also give rise to newer and more dedicated products.

Customer Benefits from Insights

To make technologies work in tandem, establishing a vision of not only expanding physical and cybersecurity but also to benefit customers along the way is essential. Once the idea is clear, it’s vital to leverage the current technologies such as AI and internet of things (IoT) and to test their use cases when combined with the physical security establishments.

Combining physical security and cybersecurity faces a challenging road ahead, but there are numerous opportunities too.
