Unlimited Flying Time for Drones with Wireless Charging Hotspots

Enterprise Technology Review | Friday, March 22, 2019

Drones are influencing the everyday life of people and have become a crucial part of modern life from personal to commercial operations. But one of the biggest challenges drones were facing during operations is battery drainage. During commercial operations, drones were struggling to stay in the air for longer duration and could not go beyond 30 minutes that holds back the full potential of drone. To overcome this problem, a Portland-based company, Global Energy Transmission (GET), has developed wireless hotspot charging spots. Using this technology, an electric industrial class drone can repeat the cycle of charging and flying until the battery is drained with just six minutes hovering over the spot without landing or connecting to a cable.

The charging spot looks like a hexagonal shape pole standing 26 feet across which is large enough for several drones to hover over and charge simultaneously. The interesting point about this charging system is that a drone can travel unlimited distance if these systems are stationed at convenient locations throughout the route.  This can be helpful in the delivery process particularly to warehouses using a drone. Videos posted online by the company shows that drone can continuously fly for two hours and the timing can be beaten with further advances in the future. The unlimited flying time will give a new perspective to the use of the drone in the business. The installation and operation and maintenance support cost will go to 120,000 dollars which may be not affordable for the small businesses, but big players can be benefited with this.

This innovation will reinvent the commercial drone industry. The unlimited flying time will lead to better surveillance giving a whole new perspective to the security allowing 24/7 vigilance facility, reducing the workload and enhancing the security. For instance, a drone can be deployed for the surveillance at a place or condition where human could not reach even in extreme weather conditions. It can improve the monitoring process of the construction sites giving a better angle for mapping.

Drones are currently being used for various purposes from videography and photography to mapping and site monitoring in construction sites, rescue missions. and transportation of organs from one hospital to another. The development of wireless charging network will transform the usage of drones in the coming years.
